The Twist is 50 years old

 

 

 

The Twist, on the B-side of a record, debuted in Augus= t, 1959, with a songster by the name of Hank Ballard.   

 

He urged his record company to let a young singer, Chu= bby Checkers, record it for mass distribution.=   Chubby sang it on Dick Clark’s Saturday Night program in Augus= t, 1960, and the rest is part of our history.=  

 

Inspired by rock and roll, the Twist was the first wor= ldwide popular dance.  Ballard and his group’s rendition were considered too provocative; so he was complete= ly in favor of having Chubby record the hit song.

 

Chubby was recently asked about the dance and spoke to= its steps and rhythm as being something everyone interested can do.  P= eople dance separately in the dance.

 

Continuing on as we celebrate life and its opportuniti= es, can be new and exciting if we let it.  As we accept that we live with our evolving world as a constant feat= ure, it becomes increasing clear-er that change can bring delight and true progress.  Oh yes our personal= world has become a proverbial Niagara Falls of daily changes. 

 

Might we think of them as opportunities? 

 

Many of us are slow to change, but most have the desire and adaptability for it.  Additionally, we do want the chang= es, but now, we want them at our own selected pace.  Recently I spoke to my own learning curve having the pace of a turtle.  I added my ability and its similarity to the oft quoted fable of The Tortoise and the Hare.  So let me be plain spoken here = 211; I am like that tortoise as I will be among the winners who pursue changes, de= cide which are good, positive, appropriate, or just plain fun, and stop with the= others. 

 

Twist of course is now a classic dance, relegated to t= he archives and fond memories.  F= ifty years is a long, long time.  A= re we all classics?  Yes.  Have we relegated ourselves to the archival area?  I can’t = answer for you; for myself, no.    

 

I don’t anticipate making a bucket list, couldn&= #8217;t afford the travel expenses…but continuing to pursue changes?  You betcha.

 

Chubby is correct – any of us interested in participating, dancing, to some of our world’s continuing changes is possible.
