Shawnee Mission, KS
Shawnee Mission’s name is from the Shawnee Metho= dist Mission, a mission to be Shawnee Tribe, founded in 1830, in the present-day Wyandotte Cty, KS. It was moved to what is now Johnso= n Cty, in 1939. = If the independent cities that constitute Shawnee Mission were to incorporate = into a single municipality its 2005 population estimate would surpass Wichita as= Kansas’ largest city. S-M is part of = the KC Metro area.
Mission, KS
The city’s site was once a rest stop for wagons = moving westward on the Santa Fe Trail during the 19th Century. The clear spring water rising to t= he surface in present-day Mission made it an ideal place to collect water for = horses and travelers. The city cover= s 2.5 sq. miles.
Merriam, KS
The city was named in honor of Charles Merriam, part-t= ime secretary treasury of the old Kansas City, Fort Scott, and Gulf Railroad, w= hich ran through the area. The city straddles approximately three miles of I-35. Turkey Creek flows through the city which has a total of 4.3 sq. miles all of which are land.
